BCNUEJ director Isabelle Anguelovski was invited to advise the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the EU, bringing her expertise on green gentrification and affordable housing to the heart of policy discussions.

The committee, established in January 2025, is tasked with investigating the structural causes behind the housing crisis across Europe and shaping future EU-level strategies for accessible and equitable housing. As part of its first official visit, the committee traveled to Catalonia, where Anguelovski offered critical insights—drawn from years of research at BCNUEJ—on the growing pressures of tourism-driven displacement, short-term rentals, and housing exclusion in cities like Barcelona.

Her contributions emphasized the need to align urban greening and climate adaptation policies with housing justice, warning against sustainability efforts that unintentionally fuel inequality and displacement.

The committee’s choice of Barcelona for its inaugural mission was well received, positioning the city as a case study for many of the urban housing challenges Europe currently faces. The next visit is planned for Vienna in July 2025, with more cities to follow.
