ABCD Neighborhood Design Seminar in Boston, MA, USA | 4th of April 2017

Codirector of BCNUEJ James Connolly moderated this panel titled Poverty by Design: Your Neighborhood. Your Health as part the Action for Boston Community Development’s (ABCD) Neighborhood Design Seminars, a series that examines the effects of the built environment on vulnerable residents and looks for ways in which planners might rethink key elements—construction, streetscape, land use, and more—to the betterment of community health.

Panelists discussed the conditions for creating safe and healthy homes and communities and highlighted different policy interventions and community organizing strategies for building healthier and more equitable urban environments. For instance, the Boston Public Health Commission works to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities and address the environmental factors that make those disparities more acute through the city. Alternatives for Communit and Environment – Building Power for Environmental Justice, an environmental justice nonprofit, mobilizes for improvements in environmental conditions and health outcomes such as asthma and obesity, while fighting for just and affordable housing.
